Up against all-conquering expectations, ‘The Supremes’ combined to produce one of the greatest performances in Australian Olympic history. Three-time Olympian Bronte Campbell got Australia off to a swift start before handing over the reins to 19-year-old Olympic debutant Meg Harris. With maturity beyond her years and a heart full of ticker, Harris charged down the Swedish front-runners to wrestle back the lead for the green and gold. It was there for the taking and Emma McKeon went ballistic with a sensational third leg – recording the fifth-fastest relay split in history to set Australia up for victory. With gold in sight and the world watching, there was no swimmer more primed for the moment than our very own Cate Campbell. The 2020 Australian Olympic flag bearer, composed as ever, continued to blitz away from the pack, touching the wall with a time of 3:29.69 – shaving 0.36 seconds off the team's very own world record. In unprecedented times with many Australians facing difficult circumstances back at home, this team gave every Australian a reason to smile and be truly proud of our great country, a monumental effort that will never be forgotten.
